How Long a First Purchase Really Takes, Step by Step
Advertised times describe the payment. The whole process, from signup to coins that can move, usually runs longer.
Venues advertise the payment step and buyers plan around the whole process. The two differ by hours, sometimes by days.
Signup and verification
Minutes if the automated check passes on the first attempt. Hours to days if it goes to manual review.
This step is the largest source of variance in the entire process and it is the only one that can be completed in advance, before there is any price to miss.
Funding
Card: seconds. Bank transfer: same day domestically if sent before the cut-off, next business day otherwise, longer across a weekend.
Cut-off times are published and widely ignored. A transfer sent at six in the evening is a next-day transfer at almost every bank.
The purchase
Seconds, once the money is there. This is the step the marketing describes and it is almost never the bottleneck.
The hold
Many venues restrict withdrawal for a period after a first card deposit, commonly between twenty four hours and seven days. The coins are bought and visible, and they cannot leave.
A regulated venue for the first purchase will state this period in the terms. Buyers discovering it at the moment of withdrawal usually assume something has gone wrong.
The withdrawal
Minutes to an hour on most networks once released, plus confirmations. Bitcoin confirmations take longer than most people expect during congestion, and the venue’s own internal review adds time that the network does not.
Adding it up
Best case, with verification already done and a card: under five minutes end to end, with coins movable immediately if the venue applies no hold.
Realistic first attempt, starting from nothing: half a day to three days, with verification accounting for most of it.
What this means for timing a purchase
A first purchase cannot be timed to a price. Anyone trying to buy a particular level should verify first and fund first, then wait with money already in place.
Onramps that finish verification in one sitting narrow the window but do not remove it, and the hold period after a first card deposit is the part most often forgotten. Where the plan is to move coins out promptly, exchanges that publish their deposit limits usually publish the hold alongside them.
Prices, limits and verification times change without notice. Everything above describes what was true at the date on this report; check current terms before you act on it.
