Every onramp sells speed at a price. The premium is measurable and the decision to pay it is usually made without measuring.

## What the premium buys

Removal of the gap between deciding to buy and holding the asset. On a card that gap is seconds; on a bank transfer it can be three days across a weekend.

During that gap the price moves. That is the entire product.

## What the premium costs

Between one and four percentage points of the purchase, depending on venue and method. On a thousand dollars, ten to forty dollars.

## When it is worth paying

When the amount is small enough that the premium is trivial in absolute terms and the convenience is real. Three dollars on a hundred is a reasonable price for not thinking about it.

When a deadline is genuine: a payment due, an invoice to settle, a counterparty waiting.

## When it is not

On recurring purchases, where it is paid every month forever for a smoothing benefit that measurement does not support.

On large amounts, where the premium in absolute terms exceeds what anyone would knowingly pay for three days of certainty. Forty dollars to avoid a weekend is a different proposition from four hundred.

## The asymmetry nobody mentions

Paying for speed protects against the price rising during the wait. It does nothing about the price falling, which happens as often.

Over many purchases the gap averages to approximately nothing, and the premium averages to exactly what it says. The speed is bought with certainty, not with expected return.

## The route that removes the choice

Money already sitting at a verified venue settles instantly at the cheap rate, because the slow step happened in advance. This is the only way to have both.

It requires leaving fiat at an exchange between purchases, which is a question about the venue rather than about speed. [A regulated venue for the first purchase](https://collectnexchange.cy/compliance/cysec-licensed) makes that defensible; an unlicensed one does not.

## The comparison in practice

Price the purchase both ways at the same venue on the same screen. [A platform that accepts a card and a bank transfer alike](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/crypto-onramp) will show both, and the difference is usually larger than the estimate made from memory.

Then decide, per purchase, rather than once. [Venues where the first purchase does not need a broker](https://collectnexchange.cy/) let that decision stay with the buyer instead of being made by the default screen.
