The Hidden Cost of Buying on a Weekend

Banking hours have not moved. Buying when they are closed changes the spread, the settlement time and occasionally the price.

Crypto markets run continuously and the banks funding them do not. The mismatch costs money on Saturdays and Sundays.

Why the spread widens

Market makers price risk, and the risk of holding a position rises when the ability to hedge or to move fiat falls. Weekend spreads are consistently wider than weekday spreads on the same pairs.

The effect is modest on the largest pairs and pronounced on smaller ones.

Why transfers do not settle

A bank transfer initiated on Friday evening is processed on Monday in most systems. The money is neither in the account nor at the exchange for two days.

Buyers who initiate on Friday intending to buy on Saturday are usually buying on Monday, at Monday’s price.

Why card purchases become more attractive and more expensive

The card rail runs continuously, which is why it becomes the only option. The card premium is therefore paid precisely when the spread is also widest.

The two costs compound rather than substitute.

The volatility argument

Large moves do happen over weekends, partly because the same thin conditions amplify them. That is an argument for not transacting in them, not for transacting faster.

A buyer reacting to a weekend move is paying a wide spread to act on information that will still be available on Monday.

Where it matters most

Larger purchases, thinner pairs, and any transaction where the fiat leg has to move. A small purchase of a major asset on a Saturday costs slightly more; a large purchase of a thin one costs considerably more.

What removes the problem

Fiat already positioned at the venue before the weekend. The slow leg happens on a weekday and the purchase itself is instant whenever it is made.

That again turns the question into one about where the balance sits. A regulated venue for the first purchase is the condition that makes positioning funds in advance a reasonable thing to do.

The practical habit

Fund on a Tuesday, buy when you intend to, and treat weekend prices with suspicion. Collect & Exchange, which quotes the conversion separately from the fee makes the weekend widening visible rather than buried, and exchanges that publish their deposit limits usually publish their cut-off times with them.
