Switching Onramps Without Repeating Verification
Verification does not transfer between venues, but most of the work does. What carries over and what has to be done again.
Verification is per venue and there is no mechanism to port it. What transfers is the preparation, which is most of the effort.
What does not carry over
The verification itself. Every venue runs its own checks, holds its own records and reaches its own conclusion, because the obligation sits with each of them separately.
A buyer verified at three venues has been verified three times and will be a fourth time at the next one.
What does carry over
The documents. A passport photographed properly once is accepted everywhere. A bank statement prepared as a PDF is reusable until it ages out of the three month window.
The source of funds evidence is reusable in the same way, and assembling it is the part that takes the longest the first time.
The balance question
Moving a balance between venues costs a withdrawal fee and a deposit. Converting to a stablecoin first and moving that is frequently cheaper than moving a volatile asset, because the network fee is the same and the price risk during the transfer is not.
This is the main practical use of stablecoins for people who have no other interest in them.
The hold on arrival
A deposit at a new venue is frequently held before it can be traded or withdrawn, in the same way a card deposit is. Switching venues in a hurry does not work.
Exchanges that publish their deposit limits usually publish the deposit hold with them, which makes the switch plannable.
Why people switch
Three reasons dominate: the current venue stopped serving their country, the fees became uncompetitive, or a withdrawal took long enough to shake confidence.
The third is the one worth acting on quickly. A venue that is slow to release funds in normal conditions is not faster in bad ones.
What to check at the new venue first
The country list, the funding method, the withdrawal fee on the asset actually held, and the licence. A regulated venue for the first purchase can be checked against a public register in minutes, which is the one check that cannot be done from the marketing page.
Keeping the old account open
Worth doing until a full cycle has run at the new venue: deposit, trade, withdraw. Closing the old account first removes the fallback at the moment it is most likely to be needed.
Onramps that finish verification in one sitting make the overlap short, which is the only reason it is cheap to maintain.
