Recurring Buys: What They Fix and What They Hide
Automatic purchases solve a behavioural problem and create a cost one. The fee structure matters more than the schedule.
A recurring purchase removes the decision to buy, which is the problem most buyers actually have. It also multiplies whatever the venue charges.
What it fixes
Timing. Buyers who decide each month when to purchase tend to purchase after a rise and skip after a fall, which is the opposite of the intended discipline.
An instruction set once and left alone removes the judgement, and with it the pattern.
What it hides
Cost. A recurring buy runs on the instant-buy path at almost every venue, which carries the wide quote rather than the order book price.
Twelve small purchases a year at two per cent cost more in total than two larger purchases at the same rate, because the flat components do not scale down.
The number worth calculating
Take the monthly amount, find the all-in cost of one purchase at that size, and multiply by twelve. Then compare against quarterly purchases of three times the size.
The answer is frequently a meaningful fraction of a year of returns, and it is entirely controllable.
Where the schedule matters less than assumed
Weekly against monthly makes very little difference to the average price paid over a year. It makes a substantial difference to the fee total, because fees are per transaction.
Buyers choosing weekly for smoothing are paying four times the transaction count for a smoothing effect that measurement does not support.
The card question
Recurring purchases funded by card carry the card premium every time. Funded by standing bank transfer, they frequently carry almost nothing.
Setting up the transfer takes longer once and costs less every month after. A platform that accepts a card and a bank transfer alike lets that change be made without moving venue.
What to check before setting one up
Whether the recurring path uses the same fee schedule as a manual purchase, because at some venues it does not. Whether the instruction can be paused without being deleted. And what happens if the funding fails: silently skipped, or retried in a way that overdraws.
Collect & Exchange, which quotes the conversion separately from the fee, makes the first of those answerable before committing to a year of it.
The honest summary
Recurring buying is a good habit executed through the most expensive product most venues sell. The habit is worth keeping. The product is worth replacing with venues where the first purchase does not need a broker and the recurring one does not need the retail screen.
